A short series of incremental steps sculpt a 2.4 metre bench from a solid block of Scented Cedarwood.

With a footing remaining at either end, two angled cuts form a V-section, leaving sufficient supporting material underneath and the space for unrestricted leg movement. A narrow gap above the ground creates lightness, while a small undercut adds a finger grip to aid lifting.

Heavily architectural, it is perhaps best suited to an environment where a pitched roof, structural beam or set of pillars are present.

As a natural partner to the bench, a refectory table was in the medieval era, intended to encourage the egalitarian values of religious orders through face to face engagement.

Designed as a self-assembly product where a stretcher, with a spacer glued in the centre and tenons cut on either side is pinned in place using four elongated stainless steel bolts. Slots in each of the slab ends create four feet and provide the space to tighten up the dry joints.

As an outdoor product defined by an interplay of space and volume, it could as equally be found in the back garden as in the beer garden.
